Science Fictional Abstract no 1 - might be a Space Whale

Dear Blenderistas,

These days, I’m more interested in materials and textures than modelling. I let the Displace Modifier create a weird mesh for me then tried lots of material and texture settings on it. This result, with a transparent material, is my favourite.

The Blender 2.70 internal render took about 9 and a half minutes.

A HDR image was used in the World settings. No other fancy stuff went on there - no Indirect lighting, no Environment Lighting nor Ambient Occlusion.

Over in the Material Settings, Ramps were used with the Diffuse and Specular shaders. I made use of Z Transparency and Mirror (ray-traced) reflections.

In Photoshop, stars and nebulae were added to the Vertex-painted background. Four of the stars were enhanced with a Blender Halo to fake lens flares.

This close up is Blender only, that is, without the Ps post production.

What do you think of my project?

Yours Blenderly,
-f.

For me it seems to be an alien fish
Render looks pretty good, keep work!

Thanks for the encouragement, timmek.
