It’s only twelve eighty-four because people are too lazy to pronounce twelve hundred and eighty-four. Twenty hundred, as far as I know, isn’t a valid word combination (as opposed to nineteen hundred and twenty-one hundred).

Long as someone doesn’t still refer to 1904 as “Turn of the Century” instead of “Turn of the 20th Century” I’m okay. This past decade was the “Turn of the Century”.
