Wesley's (demsugar) Sketchbook

Hi ToshiCG,

Yes this is a big question. You can basically transfer everything, the cool part is that forces me to learn about the engine itself, the algorithm they use etc to be able to translate the properties more accurately and think in multiple levels. The biggest issue i have right now is the Fresnel because in blender there is actually no way to customize a Fresnel curve properly. CynicatPro has a good custom well explained Fresnel node but in a game engine point of view. It still not accurate enough to reflect properly the reality but it is a very good start. For example the translation of the v-ray fall of map for custom curve is the Layer wight/Facing node but it missed entries for customize the way it falloff. Stuff like that have to be figure out but to be honest v-ray is way more advanced than Cycles nothing to be surprise about but doesn’t mean you can’t be in the heavy league artist with cycle at the end of the day you are the artist not the software. Me personal my goal it to start my own cgi studio so the engine i use will be up to me. I plan to use cycles + octane or rendeman.

Leaning other engine will definitely improve your understanding of rendering and materials property.

Hope it helps and thanks for you comment man i really appreciate it.

Mastering Cycles sessions. A rust study for personal project. Something still looks fake but i can’t figure it. Take a break from it and will came back later.

Thanks for the reply. I remember he was splitting the RGB of the spectacularity and modifying each curve to get accurate reflections. I can see how once you get it you’ll have high level of mastery over materials.

Nice material. I think the secular is just a tad too strong for rust.
I’m interested how you progress so I look forward to more updates from you.

Hi man,

Yeah he did it because of the inaccuracy of the Fresnel value in V-Ray (and most render engine when you think about it). The way to implement the same concept in Cycles…It is possible but require complicate math equation node to take in consideration the wavelength of the material and it is out of my skills.

You absolutely right my rust is completely fake because the reflection didn’t take in consideration the bumpiness of the difuse map. I fix the specular value this type of rust isn’t as intense. This is another update Looks better but some more teak needed.

Thanks man i really appreciate and i will look for yours as well and at the end of the year hope we’ll make crazy progess.

Edit 01-18-2016 : I forgot to mention this is a full procedural shader.

The metal shader i’ll mix the rust with.

Here’s the mix:

Yeah, man, let’s make cool things happen this year!

I’d say your rust is great now but the metal is still a bit off. With this noise pattern on it, it may as well be marble or stone.
Then again I could be completely wrong since I don’t know what look you’re aiming for. Do you have a real world reference you’re trying to recreate? I think the best way to do this kind of realistic stuff is to have one reference that you try to match as closely as possible (you can of course use more references for smaller details). Having one particular reference eliminates a lot of questions - the CG image either looks like it or it doesn’t

Oh yeah, have you considered using v-ray in Blender? I just saw a video recently and it seems like the integration has come a long way.
This is the video. It happens to be in my native tongue so let me know if you want to know something but basically it shows that pretty much all major v-ray features are supported nicely. V-ray standalone is $350.

Yeah man let’s make some stuff. THis is the ref i try to match:

Yeah i am on the refine process the pattern is to strong. I have consider it but the problem is I’m broke as hell man and cannot afford any license actually so that’s why i’ll go with Cycles and luxrender. I save up money for a year sabbatical to be able to work hard on my new portfolio and get out of the madness i’m in right now. Luxrender is…freaking fast the last release is just blowing up and i can’t wait to dive into it.

This is the third layer of the shader. It is a complete fail i’ll work on it tomorrow:

And a 3d model i started yesterday. Almost finished. I recieve a very harsh critique on my BMW topology to i did this in between to get my confidence back lol.

I see. Yeah, I’m in a similar boat right now, but we’re quite lucky to have awesome tools like Cycles and Blender for free. Gotta try Lux sometime but trying addons and renderers can turn into a time-waster so I’m sticking to cycles for now.

Yeah that’s for sure. But it depend also of your goals. If you want to work in house you’ll have to use standard tool. For modeling it doesen’t matter but for for rendering etc for sure. What is your goal?

And done:

Last material is looking good!

My plans: I’m about to leave my current job next month, having accumulated some money to hold me above water for a while. So for a while I’ll be working full time on my skills/portfolio so I can get work that is in line with the way I want to develop. Ideally I want to work for myself but if reality disagrees I’ll try to land the best studio job I can. Basically а sink or swim strategy lol

Man this is great. For me where i leave cgi doesn’t exit and my plan is to create my own cgi studio with hard worker friends ( Friends i don’t have yet) and do meaningful and fun work. I give myself this year to change my career. I started building my skills since September and want to double my level at the end of this year.

So man let’s challenge ourselves tell me how you plan to study, make personal piece, etc and we can discuss about it.

X6 again. After recevieing pretty bad feedback about my meshes i decide to start it from stratch so here is the cage.

Cage looks good, man!
Keep the updates coming!

Update. Not a ton achieve today. http://i.imgur.com/HJ8eunnh.png

Thanks man working on it ;).

The wheel cause me some problem i have to redo it. It is good now.
