Michalis, not bad.
Kevin Tee, corrected in my OO sheet, upload later.

Thanks, you hit F12 and I have a lot of work for a saturday.

Cheers, mib.

Wow. My system REALLY doesn’t like this .blend file.

My specs:
3x GeForce GTX Titan (Driver 335.23 WHQL)
Windows 8.1 64 bit
Blender 2.70 (Official released)

GPU SLI Disabled (how I normally render)
When I open and press F12, render finishes in 1 second with blank render output
When I which to Rendered view in the 3D View, “CUDA error: Launch failed in cuCtxSyncronize()”
GPU SLI Enabled (for troubleshooting)
Hard system lock up requiring a reset - This is the first time I have seen this behavior
CPU Render:
Render completes in 5:34.77 with only Tiles setting change to 16

I suspect an unstable NVIDIA driver, considering others are not reporting this.
If any developers want to troubleshoot this as a suspected Blender bug, PM me.

Do you use the newest beta drivers or the stable version?

335.23 is the “stable” tested release. I don’t see a later beta release at this time. I’ve not seen any problems with GPU rendering otherwise.

Thank you all for posting.

FutureHack, one user has GTX 780, iirc it is the same core as Titan.
Very strange, if you cant find a solution, older driver or so please report in tracker.

Cheers, mib.

I think we’ll be seeing the 580s come out on top; after the 5 series nVidia did some tweaks to the firmware (i think?) which optimized it for gaming but made it worse at rendering stuff like this.

Please don`t spread information that is not true. Nvidia gimped the 600 series, yes, but GTX 780, 780 Ti, Titan and Titan Black are considerably faster than 580. There is absolutely no reason to buy several generations old hardware that requires more power, generates more heat and takes more space in the case.

As you can clearly see, GTX 780 is faster than GTX 580. And 780 Ti and Titan Black are even faster than the regular 780.

Oh true. I misspoke. I guess I was talking about cards that are within most peoples’ budgets. But yes you are definitely right; the 780 and its ilk is definitely faster than a 580.

The GTX 780 and the GTX 780 Ti have the same problem as the GTX 580 3GB, the VRAM. But let’s assume that you’re not VRAM limited and you will find that an used GTX 580 3GB goes for 200€, a GTX 780 for more than twice that amount and the cheapest GTX 780 Ti for 600€.

The GTX 580 3GB is the best bang for the buck you will ever find and has the same VRAM as way more expensive and newer cards while being barely slower.

As for the power consumption the GTX 580 has a worse ratio, but the actual power needed to run them is the same. Actually, you’d need years to offset the price tag with the electricity bill.

I really hope AMD cards will work sooner or later with Cycles as you can get an HD 7970 6GB for 500€ and I highly doubt the yet to be released R9 290X 8GB will break the 700€ mark.

Key word here - “used”. I cant even get a 580 here anymore (and the price listed is 500-600€ if I could) and if its used then it has probably run out of guarantee period so its unrealiable. It could have artifacts or some other defects youll never know until you use it under heavy load. If I remember correctly then it also takes 3 slots on the motherboard, new cards need only 2.

Though VRAM is still an issue, true. I too hope that AMD cards will get in a working state in near future but I`m not holding by breath, getting Titan Black this summer.
