“…materials which do not obey the face-shader paradigm…” so this is something artificially projected into the Camera, like alpha billboards always facing direction Camera; Cycles (“true” raytracer) do not have them therefor. Hair - BI has ‘something’ which renders; Cycles has planes or tubes instead - “real” geometry, polys which render slow and kill GPU rendering by sheer numbers.
Environment rendering (no camera) wont show such fakes - you’d need to use 6 cameras and render 6 times to get something like environment map. Even then -hallos do not emit light, do not reflect (see above) so you’d need to use anything else, figure how to substitute for that.
