Add extra bone vertex groups to rigged model?

Sorry for the awful title, I wasn’t sure how to label it.
Recently I made a rig for a character I’m making. I attached the model to the rig with empty weights and added the correct vertices to the corresponding groups. When I got to the hand I realized I never made the fingers, so I added them to the rig and realized that I had no idea how to add the new finger bones’ vertex groups to the model without losing my current vertex groups’ assignments unless I did it all manually. Considering there are 20 new bones in total that would be a pretty tedious job. Is there any way to do it automatically?
(Sorry if this wasn’t worded the best, I’m not very good with remembering terminology)

You could try making the fingers a separate armature.
Then after the automatic weighting is through, join the 2 armatures.
