mesh to curve with vector handles

Hi everyone! I have to draw a big net like structure made with tubes. I will go with curves, they are perfect for the look. However, drawing polygons is much faster to block out the structure of the net (I have a precise reference for that).

So I thought I’d draw the edges and then convert to curve. The problem is, when I convert the mesh to curve, my handles are super sharp, and I cannot find a way to have the nice handles of the curves that will allow me to have soft curves and control over the shape of the curve.

I tried to convert the handle type with the V key, but no success… is there a way to make the converted curve (first picture) to look like a normal curve (second picture)?

In Toolshelf under Tools / Curve Tools (in Edit Mode) use the ‘Set Spline Type’ to Bezier instead of Poly
