Ended up scrapping my whole node set up and starting from scratch with a bump node instead of normal map. Works much better.

When working with normal maps, this needs to be set to “non-color data”:

I ended up getting, just went with a bump node instead. Thanks.

SOLVED

Both normal and bump maps will reveal themselves easily as fake in an extreme close-up like your first reference image.
Displacement might work better in those situations, but with Cycles’ lack of adaptive subdivision you will need an ungodly amount of Subsurf levels and still see artefacts:

This is already at Subsurf level 6 (could have used a higher res displacement map, though).

Doesn’t have to look perfect. I do packaging design for the company I work and we are these are just concepts right now. When we decide on something we like and have it manufactured, we will photograph the final.

wow thats exactly what i’m looking for, that looks great
