Need some help for UV unwrapping this model....

Hey guys,
I have some experience in unwrapping models, but I am having some trouble particularly with respect to this one. The depression I have created is the problem. Also I would gain some insight on how to correctly UV map objects like these.

Thanks!

Hope helps.

Thanks a lot man!!! Looking at your uv seams, I learnt a new technique to unwrap bevels.

Thanks man! I was trying to unwrap another similar model. How were you able to unwrap this face and and keep it straight?

Whenever I do it I get this

Mostly by sticking to the rule of “where should i cut this paper shape by scissors to get it laid flat on the table”.
In addition, right after UV unwrap there is an option on the toolshelf to use Angle Based or Conformal methods. One is better suited to the organic shapes (think potatoes) which will have some stretch going on however you try, another suits “Cubes” well.
Rule of thumb - have a minimum of seams, place them on the most hidden edges of your mesh.
If you fail to produce good unwrap do not hesitate to delete it on object Data tab, UV Maps by hitting minus icon and start again fresh.
If some mesh parts (faces) are unwrapped, looking good and placed in UV Editor, Pin them and UV unwrap again. Pinned UV points will stay. Practice.

Thanks for the advice. After pinning, the rest of the UV’s cover the pinned vertices. Is it normal?

Yes, but you certainly do not want different parts of islands overlapping for the finished unwrap. Select new island and scale/place as you see fit. Point is that already unwrapped and pinned parts do not change. After you finish unwrap and unpin all Average Islands Scale will take care of texture scale for all parts being equal and Pack Islands will try to fit islands in UV grid space (you might prefer manually placed islands though).

OK, Thanks for the advice.
