weird flame behaviour using smoke high resolution and collisions

Hello,
I just came across a behaviour i cannot explain:
when activating smoke high resolution, the flame disappears after collision with a shield- like object, altought i only (un)checked the show high resolution field.

Please help, as I have no Idea what I did wrong here.
