Modelling fake wisp/flame as a mesh

How to model wisp/fire/flame as a mesh?
I could then add coloramp translucent material and have a fake flame/wisp.
I think to start with a UV sphere and then extrude in some way.
I need a idea how to do it.


Well you’d probably want to sculpt the flames and then retopologize/decimate the mesh. But why do you want to do this when you can just create alpha planes which are both easier to work with and look just as good…?

What do you mean alpha planes ?

obviously there are no answers…

“alpha plane”= plane with material whitch is transparent

  1. create plane
  2. unwrap
  3. new material
  4. set material’s transparency to 0
  5. add texture
  6. set texture’s influence on transparency to 1.0f
