From point cloud to volume rendered cube in a PDF

Hi guys,

I am looking to achieve something like this http://astronomy.swin.edu.au/sao/students/3D-pdfs/pdfs/galaxyformation.pdf which seems to create a volume texture out of a point cloud. I don’t really need the different colors. I have a point cloud in a blender file, which I need to use as a source for a point density texture that I can then export into mesh lab, and then into Adobe Acrobat in U3D format. At this point, I have tried to assign a point density texture to a cube and haven’t been able to get it to render internally as I would expect it to. I have also tried to use simple objects (e.g. icosphere) as the source for the point density, though none have worked. The original blender file can be found here http://www.cv.nrao.edu/~bkent/computing/blender/nbody.blend and the one where I have tried to add the point density texture is attached point density texture galaxy.blend (1020 KB).
This is generally what I would be expecting to be rendered inside of the cube:

and this is what is actually rendered:

If any of you could help get the point density texture working, or direct me to some resources that would be great.

Can you show your node setup.

I don’t have a node setup. Is this my problem?

I was’t aware I needed nodes for a volume texture. How would I set that up?

OP - got your PM

Take a look at nodes here - particularly the last image

Thanks moony, managed to get blender to apply the volume texture, though I haven’t been able to export it as of yet. Volume textures don’t seem to work with MeshLab, which I need to convert to U3D
