Baking with Cycles and low memory - what can I do?

I am baking with cycles and using a low end pc (win7,32 bit, using CPU). Rendering with 2048px textures causes intermittent crashes.
Anything I can do memorywise? I have 4GB memory on the pc, the graphics card is an old ATI Radeon X800 with 256MB memrory - yes I’m on a budget.

In the 32 bit versions of Windows a maximum of 2 GB RAM can be allocated to any process. In other words: Even if you have 4 GB of system memory (with about 3.25 GB of that usable), Blender would still max out at 2 GB and possibly crash…

Ever thought of setting up dual boot on that system - with any 64 bit Linux as the second OS? That way you could at least use the full 4 GB RAM your system has to offer.

I never encounter a memory problem on my older 32 bits win

and on cpu if I remember well win should begin to swap memory!

what is the scene verts counts?
are you using big fluid or particles system ?
