Weightlessly Waiting for Light

Many excellent entries this week. Very original ideas, all very well executed. Unfortunately, I can only vote for one of them.

I’d like to see “The Garden of Edison,” which I simply think is a beautiful artistic image, in The Gallery soon. (As well as a tutorial on how-the  you did it!)

Thanks for the compliment sundial – I guess that single vote up there must be yours! The outliner in this scene is a bit of a ghost town, there is a single modeled strand which is then used in a hair system on the top of a uv sphere and duplicated a few times. I was too lazy to unwrap it, and subdivided it and painted a black and white vertex mask used in the nodes. There’s a small amount of post level tweaking in PS. Have a tour!

Nice entries everyone! Seems the dust mites are piling up dust - and votes as well

@Photox: I’m glad I didn’t bet on this - I was so sure you were using an Hair Info nodes Intercept output to drive some kind of emission/diffuse mix. Wonderful effect btw.

Helge, normally I would use an intercept/color ramp to mix shaders, but I wanted the little ball on the tip to be clearly attached to the strand so I modeled it. Originally I was going to make one those fibre optic light toys, but wound going for a nature-by-way of technology feel. Great entries all! I must say that riez has a great entry, well done.

The 3%-separator is a very nice trick. I hope I will remember it as this will definitely be useful sometime in the future.

And for the sake of completeness: a little hair/intercept test

BTW: When I was a little kid, we visited Disney World, Florida. The ‘fibre optic light toys’ are one of the things I remember best.

Nice one helge, one thing I love about cg is that anything goes, if you can imagine it you can make it. By leveraging the stack you can create complex scenes with little work.

Havent been to disney in awhile, but a couple weeks ago my girlfriend and I went to universal in Orlando for a few days, and they still have those toys. Maybe that’s what made me think of it.

Good entries everyone!
@Photox: I really liked yours, the one vote was actually from me.
@riez: This was my second favorite. I really like all the ants, but I think I’d like it better if they had crumbs of chocolate instead of bars.
@Gordi: I don’t get this one. Is it from a movie?

It was supposed to be a mock liquor add. Basically the “lightweight” wasn’t in the photo itself but looking at it, unless you are a heavy drinker of course.

And… The winner of Weekend Challenge 642 with again, bang on 50% of the votes… is… GPS14!

Here’s to all the great participators…
