Blur object around normal object

Hi, I have made something similar to an energy sphere like this:

following this tutorial https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bnrsoSagIU8

However, when I try to place some object inside this gets blurry. If I tried to allocate it in another layer, the problem seems obvious since the whole “energy sphere” appears to be ON the object instead of around it (it is posible to see the base of the semisphere over the object, instead of under it)

Here I attach how it looks and how it should look (made quickly with photoshop).

Could you orientate me with some tips on how should I proceed to get the desired effect?

Thanks a lot.

This might be because you’re using what is called surface shading, what you want instead is a volumetric shader (the imminent release of Blender 2.76 should help with this by giving you a new texture made for volumes).
