Best way to approach 2D animation?

Hi guys!

I’m new to blender and would like to make 2D animated music videos using my illustrations. So far I have uploaded one of my illustrations to gimp, layered it up, and imported them as planes into blender. I’m following a tutorial and have not completed my piece yet but shall soon.

I just thought I might as well ask you guys for any tips. Ideally I would like to be able to create videos like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NhheiPTdZCw

I have no idea what software was used for this, if it was all done by hand etc. but as I am a total noob I could really use some of your expertise.

The animation is done by hand. That is each frame was hand drawn and combined using video editing software. some of the animation sequence can be done quicker by using Blender 3D animation, like growing tentacles sequence:
