Compositing an object that needs to be on 2 layers

i have a cycles scene with a unique shape mesh light that is near a reflective wall. I want the light to be on the same layer (1) as the walls and other objects in the scene so you can see the object reflected on the walls. I would also like the light to be on layer 2 so I can give it some glow/glare. This is an animation, so other objects from layer 1 will pass in front of the light. So I need to select layer 1 as a mask for layer 2, but since the object is on both layers it masks itself and I get a blank render for layer 2. Anyone have an a solution for this? Removing it from layer 1 isn’t that big of a deal, but it would be nice to have.
