compositing in gimp

What is the correct order and blend mode of the various render passes when compositing in Gimp?

It depends what you want to do but the blend mode will be the same as the mix node in Blender or any compositing software.

In most of the cases, you will need only 3 mode :

  • Normal / Over : to put object in other images
  • Addition / Plus : to mix your shader or light together (direct diffuse + direct glossy + …)
  • Multiply : to multiply your color information to the shading (https://www.blender.org/manual/_images/Cycles_passes_combine.png) or sometime, the multiply mode is used to add some shadow with the shadow pass or the ambient occlusion but with Cycles, this is not needed that much.

And you can use anything else for a specific effect you want to do, even if it’s not accurate.

Hi VincentG.

Thanks for your response. Much appreciated.
I am new to compositing render passes and I think I understand it a little better now.
