Select Verts Via UV Editor to Separate Into New Object?

I’d like to know if there is a way to select model parts via the UV/Image Editor window so that I can separate them into a new object.

I have searched high and low for this and the only procedure I seem to be able to find is “select what you want to map on the physical model and map it from there”. unfortunately I am working with a VERY complex pre-made gaming model and it has layers of faces/verts in the area I want to paint. In this case, I can see on the UV editor exactly what I need and can select the faces there, but selecting those faces does not affect physical selection in the 3D view so that I can split that surface into a new object.

I hope i am even posting this in the right area. I am very new to this forum. I appreciate any assistance.
