mapping in render and game engine?

What vector are you trying to map? What are you trying to map it to?

When using the BGE, that purple input for material nodes at least does not work the same way as in Cycles.

Basically, the easiest way to deal with this is to simply treat the node editor like a sophisticated material mixer (so your mapping, normal data, and the like are all done in the material buttons).

You actually can make a material that entirely exists in the node editor save for basic shading options, but it gets difficult once you start dealing with normal maps.
