equirectangular rendering for Blender Internal?

Recently supported on Youtube too:

Equirectangular rendering allows to render a rectangular frame, which, if mapped to a sphere and viewed from the inside would allow you to see the video from any angle from one spot.

I hope such videos can be rendered in Blender Internal as well.
