Texture Particles based on surface texture

I’ve been trying to figure this out for a while with no luck. Is there a way in Blender to texture particles scattered on a surface with the colour information from a texture applied to the surface. So for example if particles were being scattered on a surface with a checkerboard colour, is there a way to colour the particles the same checkerboard pattern?

( edit ) just give your emmiter a material and a texture, and it will work automatically. keep it a separate object from whatever you are growing it on. in particle settings, uncheck ‘emmiter’ in the render tab
