I’ve learned just enough to hold the pen the right way up and how to avoid poking my eye with it so the results for something like a portrait aren’t that great. I’ve decided it’s finished although all I can see are the mistakes and things that would need more work. More practice.

Hey this is a really nice painting JA12, you’ve done the hair especially well - nice work!

Oh, thanks Artloader, that’s very kind.

I achieved all goals I set to myself with this one but like with everything else I’ve ever done, I keep hammering myself with the imperfections in it. I only allow one exception about a thing I did when I was 12 years old but other than that, it’s really extraordinary how self-critical I can be. Feedback does help. Positive feedback can help glancing it as someone else’s doing and negative feedback can teach.

Your work is more sketchy and colorful but it looks like you probably have come to the same conclusion about drawing/painting hair as I did. It’s about the form as much as everything else and although mine is not a very refined example, it can make use of the composition trick where things get less detailed as distance increases either in depth, or away from the focal point.

JA12 Nice portrait! Maybe work a bit more with blending the skin colors? Keep it up!

Thanks Mikael K.

Yeees the result needs work, as does the workflow in every aspect. I’ve been busy with things and haven’t had much time for Blender nor drawing and painting practice but I’ll post updates here when I have something worth sharing. In the meantime I’m happy this one kinda looks like a person instead of a backside of a baboon and check your thread for actual awesomeness.

You really captured the essence of her face. Feels real. Just some color correction and exposure could really bring it out. I did an quick photoshop of what I mean.

i really like this. the jaw line is my favorite part.
