Video editing alternative

Are there any free video editing softwares out there with good Blender compatibility?
Don’t be mistaken, Blender compositor is good, but video editing, well that’s another thing altogether

Sounds like you should give Hitfilm a go: https://hitfilm.com/express

Its a streamlined editor with an after effects like compositor attached. Also has mocha tracking built in, though it may not be in the express version (which is free). Could be wrong through. If you decide to get the pro version, which is not necessary, its pretty cheap in its own right. About $299… not bad for a video editor + AE like compositor.

To see what kind of plugins are available or work with HF, see: http://hitfilm.com/pro/plugins

Additionally, it can link in with Sony Movie Studio (Vegas) which is one my personal favorites when it comes to video editing (can go as cheap as $25 on amazon*). Its GPU based processing makes it one of the fasted editors out there. Also has some compositing functionality.
( referring to version 12, which is better imo than the recent version 13)
( 13 is also available on steam for $59.99 http://store.steampowered.com/app/330070/ )

For a more nuke like experience, see: https://natron.inria.fr/
Nuke/natron however wont excel when it comes to things like motion graphics and all that. If you choose to go this route, save it for compiling elements made elsewhere, color correction, tracking…ect

I definitely recommend hitting up hitfilm first though.

Thanks everyone, I’ll try those out.
As far as Hitfilm goes, I go for a nodal style more than a AE layer style, but I’ll still try them out. But I only need basic actions, compositing will all be in Blender.
I tried Nuke non commercial and it froze my computer, hopefully that won’t happen with Natron.
Thanks for all the suggestions guys, but all I need is a light basic video editor.

I gather you know about Blender’s VSE? You just didn’t mention it… also the best value for money NLE (on Mac) is FCPX. Continuously updated free from purchase, supports all media and has strong realtime effects .

Just my 2c

I apologize I didn’t mention it, the reason I don’t use it is because it inches along at 3 fps no matter what I do. I don’t know why, but I’m getting a new(AMD :D) computer, hopefully that helps.

I use Windows.

Http://shotcut.org is free and crossplatform. If you want your edited Shotcut projects imported (as project) in Blender, you can convert the mlt files to Blender friendly edl files with: https://eyeframeconverter.wordpress.com/mlt2edl/

Like almost every other Nle the vse works best by creating optimised media for editing with. In this case generate proxies. You should experience waaaaay better than 3 fps!

Try using Davinci Resolve, the free version is quite responsive, easy to use and quite powerful for video editng. I wouldn’t label Natron or Fusion as Video editing, great compositing though.

If you’re a hobbyist, Nuke Non-commercial. Nuke Studio has an editor built-in.

V12 beta 1 is now available for download. Amazing NLE - love it. The new edit features are at the very least on par with the very best out there, if not an improvement.

And the free version pretty much merely lacks stereoscopic support and the denoise functionality. Absolute mind-blowing that this is freely available. It makes good use of GPU acceleration as well! Working on a dual screen is like a dream.

+1 Herbert123; Agreed, mindblowing.

Davinci Resolve 12 is a hard act to follow.

I downloaded Davinci ResolveIt uses all of my 8 gigs just to open up and run. I planed to get another 16 anyway. How much ram does it your on other machines? Windows is using around 20% so Davinci is using more then 6 gigs. Is that normal? How much will it use if I have many video clips loaded?
I never understood Blender movie editor because for a 15mb clip it would use gigabytes of ram.

All NLEs buffer the clips (or parts of them) so that you have a better experience jumping around the timeline.

Sure but why does it take so much ram to buffer? Many many times the size of the clip.
How much ram does Davinci need on your computer before you load any clips?

RAM buffers are filled with uncompressed image data for very fast playback. Video files usually have compression and so they are (much) smaller.

On my PC Resolve uses about 4.6 GB of RAM before filling any buffers.

OK something is up. This looks like 89% of 24 gigabites. That cant be right.
