Rectangle spot light

Hi! I was told by a developer that we can have rectangle spot lights in Blender internal: his expression is: “You can already have non-uniformly scaled lamps in Blender Internal which makes it possible to have rectangular spot lights already.” (https://developer.blender.org/D1378)

I was wondering how we can do this? Thanks for your answers!

Set the spot shape to “Square”, then scale the spotlight along one of its axes to pull ther square light cone into a rectangular shape:

It does not work on my computer (even when I make a render (F12)). Are you sure of what you say? Have you controlled if it’s really a rectangle in top view (7) without lamp rotation (if the lamp has rotation you can have the impression that it is a rectangle whereas it’s not a rectangle)? If it works, are you on windows or on linux? Thanks for your answer!

The problem doesn’t seem to be lamp rotation, but camera rotation…
For a top down camera view the cone is still square, but as soon as you rotate the camera around it becomes rectangular:

Yes, that’s the same spot light in both renders. Looks like a bug to me…

Ah ok Thanks very much!

is this somehow doable in cycles?
