It seems I all too often forget to create new WIP threads for my 3D work
Here’s a model I finished last night. It’s an Asus X99E-WS motherboard that I’ll be using in an upcoming computer build. As such I thought it a good idea to make a full on 3D model for it like I have with previous projects.
The renders were all done in Cycles and took about 10 minutes each at 800 samples for 3840x2160 res
Hope you enjoy them! If you have any questions I’d be happy to try and answer them. (Click the pics for full 4k res)
I have this board in my computer. I’m looking at it through the window pane on my tower and then looking back to this image and this one looks better imo, lol, great work!
Haha not this time I think. My last one made it there but had a lot more sections to it. You never know, maybe the final version of this one will? Thank you for the compliment though
I basically dismantled parts of the board (removing the heatsinks, PCIe clips etc.) in order to reduce the surface clutter. Then it was just a matter of taking a sharp photo and using it as a base texture. I made a bump map from the photos and used that to help get the reflections looking more accurate. PCBs reflect a lot of light surprisingly enough, so getting that bit of shine really helps add to the realism.
Aye they can be fiddly things, endless nooks and crannies. The last board I modeled had less that half the detail per element, I guess it’s just a matter of getting into that zone and beavering away.
Cheers!
Maybe for the final piece (this is just one of the components remember). The spotlight on this one was just to get it looking very close to the real thing. Thanks for the stars!
Thanks Seb!
Rofl I have to admit the real thing has a few more imperfections than this one, got one sitting next to me atm too. Beautiful piece of kit though, very simple and elegant, should look great with some other more OTT components.
So just in case anybody may have thought I was simply dumping these renders and not giving a little more back, I was in fact working on a little animated sequence for this board. In short I managed to cut the render time down to ~26s per frame (reducing the samples and cutting the res to 1080p helped a lot) which made it viable for a short animation. I had hoped to do it all in a day, but I went out for lunch and didn’t come back until late afternoon, so it ran over a bit. I’ll add it to the OP also so that future passers by don’t miss it.
I’m such a fan of your work, dude, the painstaking attention to detail and materials is absolutely mind-numbing (and i do get a particular geek-on over shiny new computer parts - who doesn’t, right? lol) amazing
