Understanding Render Layer Passes settings from old version of Blender

I am trying to learn compositing and have found an old tutorial by Jonathan Williamson.

At 5:15 he ticks a load of settings, which in Blender 2.73 have now been renamed, or have “direct, indirect, color” options.

I would like to understand how these settings translate to one another. At the same time I am curious as to what the extra settings have given to Blender.

They have not been renamed. The tutorial is using the Blender Render engine and you are using the Cycles Render engine. Select the render engine from the drop down list at the top of the blender interface. There are also compositing tutorials on cgcookie for the cycles renderer that cover these options.

Thanks Richard for taking the time to answer my dumb question. I can’t believe I didn’t spot that. Doh!
