How to create material ID in Blender 2.70 ?

The only out of date blender version I have currently is 2.72 but I don’t think it would be any different

Add a number to the Material / Options / Pass Index (blender render) or Material / Settings / Pass Index (cycles render)

Ensure to enable the Material Index render pass
