help with 'hyperbolic art'

Hi everyone, you guys were so helpful before thought I’d ask for more help.

So I found this video:

and like he said it’s for more advanced users and I’m unclear how to make the shape he starts with (vertexes but with an inner circle)

thank you

here’s a screen shot of starting shape:

  1. Make a circle with 12 vertices.
  2. Select every other vertex and press ‘e’ to extrude, then ‘s’ -> ‘0’ to put all the vertices in the middle of the circle
  3. Press ‘w’ -> ‘Remove doubles’
  4. select the 6 new edges and press ‘w’ -> ‘Subdivide’

You now have all the vertices needed to make the star shape, just select three at a time and press ‘f’ to fill

Hi thank you for the post. I’m trying what you suggest but can’t seem to get your instructions to give me that sphere inside the vertexes

here’s a close up picture:

thanks again, really appreciate it

Just add a subsurf modifier

I feel silly I can’t figure this out. I add a subsurf modifier and before I apply it I get what I’m looking for:

but when I actually apply the modifier I get this:

again thank you so much for the help.

Well normally you just apply the subsurf modifier at the very end after you’ve finished up everything (unless you’re trying to get more verticies to play with whilst editing) so i’m not sure why you’re trying apply at the beginning or maybe I just misunderstood the question.

Don’t apply the modifier

I’ve only ever used it for the adding more vertices while editing part.

Adding stuff without applying it to the end it new to me. Thank you, you can see how newbie I am.

and thank you Morio for coming back with the follow up answer too.

Thanks everyone with your help I got it figured out
