How to add an overlay in Cycles ?

Hi does anyone know a node setup on how to add an overlay in cycles to a character. I want to be able to do it to add more definition to the muscles on my character ! If anyone could point me in the right direction I would appreciate it !
This is the effect I want to achieve :


From initial exploration I guess that using vertex paint i.e dirty vertex colors could be used as an input to drive your node set-up, allowing you to increase gamma on color or texture or add another color in your crevices.

Hope someone gives you the best solution.
