Preparing import to Blender

Hi

I have a bicycle as .obj which I want to texture and render in Blender. It is all one part, but has about 100 named materials, all with non-identifiable names, such as material 2456, all default white.

When I import to Blender to test, the material names all show up, but it is impossible to identify any logical parts, such as handlebars, etc. from the shader names.

What would be the best method of preparing it so that I can identify the parts to texture? I am thinking of cutting it up into parts and naming them in Hexagon, because I know that app very well. I could then export as a single, grouped .obj. Would these parts show up in Blender as vertex groups? If i put holder materials on the parts, would they show up as separate materials?
