Smoke gets in your eyes, but not your gpu?

2 quick smoke questions.

  1. I was watching soem great youtube blender tuts and the guy who was doing them (A really great guy, btw) said you can’t render smoke with a gpu. Can ahyone fill me in on this a bit and is it on the 'to be worked on" slate for blender upgrades?

  2. I saw an actual large, smokey explosion on tv and noticed that the top oif the black cloud was illuminated by the sunlight forming a nice contrast with the lower parts all by itself. having never done smoke in blender yet i was wondering if blender sunlight will do this by itself or does it need some sort of setting to make it happen?

Here are the 2015 goals, don’t see gpu smoke on it, so it’s probably cpu for a while.

Sure a sun lamp can illuminate the top of a smoke cloud and make it contrast, why not? You may have better luck with smaller mesh lights whose falloff is more pronounced though.
