Fracturing hangs blender.

I want to export my blender model into Element 3D, to use it in After Effects. I saw a tutorial for that here:

But, when I try to use the fracture objects add-on, blender hangs. I’ve done this earlier, and it worked perfectly well.

Fracture does not work on self intersecting and separated open mesh parts like these:


You can however fracture elements which are cleaned, closed and do not have double vertices, normals consistent (they might even contain some inside faces to some extent, this can cause issues sometimes though):

So, is there a way to work around this?

a way around the error that you are getting? Yes, you need to make your model like eppo has mentioned.

a way around cleaning your model? no.
