I would improve the lighting in your first project. Visit Creative Shrimp(http://www.creativeshrimp.com). Maybe a light texture would make the image more exciting. Also some backlights would show that the material of the robot is metal and not a diffuse whatever. And I would add some scratchs and maybe rust. Also I would improve the ground-gravel by using different colours for the little stones. I like your composition and color style. And I would give it some compositingeffects like dispersion.

I like your textures of the airplane. Maybe I would add some rust.The materials aren’t such good one. The glass looks like a Holdoutshader. I would improve the metal-material by using a fresnel value. I will show you an image that show you the nodesetup. Also you should think about a better composition. Nice idea. Also you should use different colours for the different leaves and grassclumbs. Also I won’t use Blender strands to genrate grass.

Thanks for the massive amount of informative feedback VSE! I also feel like lighting and materials are my biggest weakness and that is noticeable on my images.

Image 1. I am already using and hdri world background, but adding a rim light and some fresnel based glossiness would help.
The material has some rust and scratches, but i will change the mix value to make it more apparent.
Image 2. I will manually paint some rust on and try to get a better composition, although the image has a single subject, so the attention is automatically focused there.
Image 3. The leaves and the ivy should be separated more. The grass is using a particle based model distribution, but i will add more grass strand models to make it more realistic.
