Smaug's Lair

Thought i’d tie together a few simple elements that i’d been working on. It’s pretty low samples around 300 or so. Hope you like it! It’s a frame from a brief video that i’ll post up shortly too!

Aidy.

I would work a little bit more on the gold part. Add more variety and more details.

and make it more “gold”

Looks good Aidy.

I was preferring a more desaturated look, though I may alter the grading a little towards more saturation and slightly higher contrast thinking about it.

Though even this ref image doesn’t quite suit my tastes, maybe i’ll just be oscillating between saturation/desaturation forever on this. Hahaaa!

Hey thanks! Anthony! Aidy.

Great job! Thought it was a reference photo at first glance.

haha! Awesome! Thanks for saying so! Aidy.

How much of the gold is real and how much is just a texture with a sizable bump (I think I see some repeating on the far pile)? It looks like you did a good job on the gold texture regardless, the pillars also look pretty decent.

Also, it’s titled ‘Smaug’s lair’, but where’s Smaug (or did he fly out of Erebor by the time this shot was taken)?

Thanks! Yeah good eye! I’m using a tiling texture mixed in with geometry. I think I should have called this Erebor or ‘suzanne’s lair’ as truth be told I have Suzanne under there waiting to emerge! haha!!

Though Lee at CG Masters who worked on Sintel (dragons abound!) has been mentioning adding a proper dragon with a cool eye opening animation, hopefully that can be incorporated at some point!
