Options for cropping/resizing/creating composite images

My use case is to assemble reference photos into a single composite image to display in Blender’s Image Editor when sculpting. I am (trying!) to use Gimp for this purpose and really want to like this software programme but it just isn’t a nice workflow and seems to be very buggy. I would like to know what other people use that is open source and cross platform (I switch between OSX and Ubuntu). Are there any that do this particular task really well? Failing that is there a relatively inexpensive paid alternative?

cheers

I guess I’m sticking with Gimp  To be fair to Gimp I was using the rectangle select tool in the wrong mode (subtract from current selection) - I must have accidentally hit a keyboard shortcut or something.

i have not had many issues with “The Gimp” in the 10 years i have been using and building the source code for the program .

now i ROYALLY dislike the new use of the antique hack “GimpShop” one window

i turn that OFF

the rec select tool has 4 options on the tool window
