Does anyone know of a good shader to represent creosoted timber?
Specifically, I’m looking to represent wooden railroad crossties. Most railroads use rough-sawn 10"x8" timbers, heavily treated with creosote. This is the same preservative used on telephone poles. It starts out a dark redish-brown, then weathers, first to flat black, then to medium gray.

Try again:
“Coal-tar creosote is the most widely used wood treatment today”
Creosote is a category of carbonaceous chemicals formed by the distillation of various tars and pyrolysis of plant-derived material, such as wood or fossil fuel. They are typically used as preservatives or antiseptics. Some creosote types were used historically as a treatment for components of seagoing and outdoor wood structures to prevent rot (e.g., bridgework and railroad ties, see image). Samples may be commonly found inside chimney flues, where the coal or wood burns under variable condition...
Also, I may want to model something that existed 50 over ago.
then try to find some old wood on web and use it as UV image!
try at CGtexture might find something
