Hi All, not sure is the right place where to post, if there’s any better place please feel free to move this.
I saw the news about blender finally supporting Alembic natively and I was wondering if there was any room for having cycles (standalone) able to digest alembic files directly. I think this would open it to great opportunities to be started using it outside of blender echosystem.
Not just outside of Blender. IIRC there was talk about using Alembic as a standin/proxy format for Cycles. Cycles would have an object type that takes a material, an alembic filepath, and a transform and it just loads the alembic file on its own, without ever having to load the object in Blender itself.
