Mars Scene

Hi All

This is a render I did of a Mars scene. I have included both with and without composite (mainly some fog and blur).

I’ve reached the limits of my current ability, so I am looking for any advice on making it better. Any (constructive!) criticism or tips would be really appreciated, and if you can do it without crushing my confidence into the floor all the better

I am quite new to Blender and 3D art in general, so don’t be afraid to dumb down your advice.

Thanks
Lewis

This is a good start but I think it can be better. Currently I feel little to no emotion to this whatsoever. I just
see a habitation module. Is there something else you can add to make this more interesting. Maybe you could make it to where the dome is destroyed or maybe there is an overturned buggy with a radioactive slime. Just add something in to attract the mind. =)

well yes and i’m sure he could add space monsters and ufos as well, but clearly that’s not what the image is about.

It’s a nice scene though it does lack some depth. Personally i wouldn’t have those hills quite so close to the lander. push the environment back to the horizon I’m sure you have looked at Nasa’s rover images, try to show more of the desolate landscape, perhaps, raise the camera height as well to help emphasis the isolation of the lander.

oh and a hoard of Xenomorphs converging on the settlement would be cool too  (j/k)

the hills are too close and BIG
have a look at the raw curiosity Mastcam images
for example like this one

now these ARE about 30% TOO GREEN

or mosaics i put together
these colors are closer to what the eye would see

Good point, thanks. It is a bit sterile. When I first started I was going to include something that “hinted” at there having been a disaster (broken glass, a helmet on the ground or similar). In the end I didn’t do this (as I got distracted by figuring out how to the basic stuff I have done).

I might return to that idea when I get back to this. Cheers.

Thank you both for this advice. Now you’ve said it I can totally see it! I will work on reworking the landscape as you have suggested to make it more unending (and thanks for the reference pointers).

When I started this I was going for a sense of desolation. As stated in my previous comments I lost track of that when just trying to learn how to do basic stuff. Thanks for the steer, now I know where I need to take this.

OK so take 2! As advised I have pushed the horizon back and moved the camera up. I am still working on something “interesting” to add to the scene, but I haven’t got any ideas at the moment.

Just to say thanks to those who provided feedback - it is very much appreciated.

looks GOOD
