Normal baking help

I am trying to make a tileable normal map of a lego brick model. I have tried everything I can think of but am always getting a solid blue image when I bake the normal map. Can anyone help me figure out what I am doing wrong? I have attached the file. Thanks in advance.

Try moving the plane above the object you want to bake


That did it. Thanks so much. So why does the plane have to be above the object? Does this still apply when working on a more compicated mesh like shown at the link below?
