Weight paint tips

I’m trying to weight paint a complex model.

I parented the armature initially using automatic weights, and the lower half of course deforms beautifully. I then painted out the areas I didn’t want in the top of the model (all the tubes) and using a multitude of weight paint brushes, blended the areas into one another, the top half of the weight painted area. However no matter how much I try and blend the hand painted areas, I still get nasty deformation over these areas.


Any obvious tips you’d recommend? Additionally I would have though there’s a way to smooth weight painted areas via the GUI, much in the same way you’d use ‘smooth vertex’ for a mesh model. Isn’t there?

Your problem may be that you do not have Preserve Volume checked in your armature modifier, rather then poor weight painting.

One tip I can give you is to weight paint in wire mode. Your screenshot is in solid. Minute weights will often be very difficult to see in that display mode.
