Cycles using GPU even when finished rendering

Hi,
I just noticed that my GPU (GTX 970) seems to remain “in use” (according to GPU-Z) even after cycles has completed all sampling in the preview window - I just wondered if that was normal? Am I using power unnecessarily?

GPU Core/Memory shows:

No rendering: 135/324
Switch preview window to “rendered”: 1340/3004
Sampling limit reached - stays at almost same level indefinitely: 1113/3004
Switch mode from GPU to CPU, drops immediately to: 695/324

I would have thought it should drop back to “idle” basically, if there’s no rendering happening?

I’m sure we all leave Cycles running after it’s “finished” - I just want to make sure I’m not shortening the life of my GPU or using excessive power…
