Rendering Artefacts - Mesh Visible in Render

Hi,

I have a relatively small mesh in a scene (I’m very new to Blender btw) the scene is set to use the metric system and the dimensions of the object are:

X 4.98cm
Y 4.98cm
Z 9.62cm

This is a Cycles orthographic render preview at 1000 samples:

The problem is you can start to see what is probably the mesh or the results of the Sub Surf modifier through the applied materials. The artefacts don’t appear at the locations of real vertices.

Solutions I’ve already tried:

  1. Ensure scale has been applied

  2. I have reduced the sub surf subdivisions to 1 which has no effect.

  3. I have tried adding an Edge Split after the sub surf which understandably made it worse.

  4. Switched to Flat shading and removed all modifiers and the problem persists.

It just seems to me at the moment that as soon as you start working with small objects the precision seems to suffer. What can be done about this?

Thanks,

J
