Blender crash 2.73a

Hi,

I just opened and modified a scene and after it crashed, I can’t open it anymore.

Is there a console log or anything that I could send you to help me understand what happened and how to solve it?

Thanks a lot for your help!
Nicolas

What it shows when opening ? Can you start blender in console, open the scene and give us the output?

I open Blender, enable the console. Open the my latest version of the file. Crash.
I opened a version of the same file saved at an earlier stage and here’s what I get in console:

Thanks for your help!

I can already see a bunch of addons errors… I don’t really know how to fix these though…
How bad is this, Doc?

Hi,

did you save the .blend file after turning on the addons in the preferences?
edit: I mean “save user settings”

I worked on this file a month ago. Since then, I installed new addons, saved user preferences.
I was then able to open the file again, make changes, saved but after a while, blender crashed and I was unable to re-open the modified and saved file.
I was able to open the original 1 month old file and got the console message I pasted in my previous post.

I’m still wondering what’s wrong with my install and how to fix this…

Thanks for your help!

The crash happens when undoing with Ctrl+Z…

I tried disabling all the addons found in the User Category. I still get a crash opening this .blend file.
I should say that any other .blend file opens with no problem…

Reseting to Factory Settings doesn’t help…
It must be in the file then… Isn’t it?

Did you try opening the file with “Load UI” unchecked?
Or alternatively: Try appending (Shift-F1) the contents into a new, clean file.

Did you move the location/directory of the file?
If so try to put it in the location before the crash happens.
Blender doesn`t like it if you change locations of files.

I`m only guessing, maybe you are out of RAM if the scene is very complex.

IkariShinji
Opening the file with Load UI unchecked: didn’t work
Appending: what should I try to append?

DERBENDER
No, I didn’t change the location of the file.
The scene is complex but it’s manageable with 16 Gb of RAM…
And I haven’t made many changes to the file that I can open before it crashes…

Thanks for your help… Still searching… Perhaps I could send someone the file?

Well, this is about recovering the contents of that file, right? So I would suggest appending one of the objects at a time until you can isolate the one (if there is such thing) that causes the crash.

I have 11.264 objects… :spin:

Btw, in the append window, is there a way to know how many objects there are in a blend file ?

Sure, if you append a scene , go to the object folder. There you see how many objects are in the scene.
Edit: you mean the exact number of objects in the scene. I can`t see something like that in the append window.

Hi ! in my case. (Blender crash at startup)

After I installed blender 2.73a and I launch it, blender open and just crash at the beginning. I have visited so many sites and still dont know what is happening.

My laptop has Windows 8.1 pro, processor Pentium® Dual Core CPU T4200 2.00GHZ
Memory Ram 3GB
System Type 64 bit
Free Space more than 100 GB

If someone could help me really appreciate it !!!

Anyone can tell me where addons are supposed to install? I have several in Program Files and some others in App Data: is this normal?
Also, I’m wondering if it’s possible to restore user prefs without default addons?

I’m still trying to debug my scene…

The scene is a very large Sketchup scene exported to Collada and imported in Blender.
I’m starting from scratch exporting element by element. And I can already see many double-sided elements and may useless vertices…
Maybe this is causing my scene crash…

Thanks a lot for helping me out: your support is giving me a lot of courage!

Hi leminilab, can you upload the file may at http://www.pasteall.org/blend/ < 30 MB.
A file should not crash Blender, may be we need a bug report for it.

Cheers, mib

In my experience, sometimes files do crash Blender. Apparently just enough things change between versions and doing what’s needed to catch the differences got missed somehow. (ie: changes adding more features to hair particles - I’ve had that happen with files from 2.68 or older, or stuff relating to newer Cycles features.)

In those cases where old .blend files crash on loading, appending everything from those same files instead of loading does work. I think this is because the appending process is much more likely to catch the “broken” stuff and updates the variables that are missing or implemented differently in older versions. Just something to try, when wanting to continue work on old files while also working with the latest and greatest release. (And to be on the safe side, do save the project as a different version when working across version changes in Blender itself.)

The file problems may be bugs, but they sometimes seem to be a lower priority and you might find it handy to know this work-around.

Hi,

The file is 70Mb… I uploaded it here:
minilab.perso.sfr.fr/MHWC_rebuild-2.blend

I’m a little bit ashamed of sending it… It’s really a big mess and the more I’m discovering Blender, the more ashamed I am… :o

But hey, this is how you learn! I hope…

:eyebrowlift:

Thanks again!
