Tube light

Hey guys,

I am trying to create a tube (hollow cylinder) with one end open, and a light at the closed end, so the light shines out the other hand, lighting the scene. Or rather several of these lighting the scene, using volumetric lighting.
I have absolutely no idea how to do this, so any and all help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Shmoo

uhm… which render engine do you plan to use?

and apart from your answer, you can allways place a spotlight in the end of each tube to get that effect. (parenting/linking can be one way, but not the only one! )
The volumetric light solution will depend on the render engine.

Hi,
You can create a cylinder, delete one circular face to open the tube and apply a diffuse shader to the cylinder.
Then you select the other circular face in edit mode and assign an emit shader to that face only.
You can flip the face using “flip normals” to make sure the emitting surface is oriented inside the tube.

Just so you know if you try to use Cycles to render a scene like that it will take a really really long time to clean up all the noise since the light sources are not directly visible by a large part of the scene (also known as a pathtracers worst nightmare)

Don’t try to light your scene like that. It will take forever. Fake it, use a spot lamp.
