I have this node setup:
So, very simple. But the output of the crop node is an empty image. The original image has a size of 558x558.
Why? Is there something fundamental I misunderstand?

The crop node doesn’t crop by the specified amount, but to the specified place. Your settings should be more like:
Left: 135
Right: 423
Up: 135
Down: 423
(because 558 - 135 = 423)
