assign different materials on cloned objects (unlink material)

Hi,
It is possible in blender to clone an object, with alt+d and assign to any of the clones unique modifier stacks, but however preserve the linking to the original geometry.

I find that this will be useful for something like creating clothes for a character (mask+solidify modifier) on the clones + some decent topology

However, I cant seem to assign unique materials to the clones of the object.
Is it somehow possible to do this? If so, how?

Thanks in advance

Assigning a unique vertex color to a clone is also not possible, alas. Or I dont know how to do it

In the materials tab next to the mat selection menu is an oft-overlooked menu that sets whether mats are taken from the shape data or the object. The default is “data”, but if you change it to “object”, you can set mats per-object, which will do what you want.

Btw, vertex colors are always shared across instances, they are part of the shape data itself that is being instanced.

That did the trick! Thank you kindly

With This I will be able to assign different textures to the clones.

Btw I notice that vertex groups are shared between instances, but their list does not get updated. Is that a bug or a limitation?
