simple plane join

Hello,

I have multiple planes with overlapping faces. I need to get the planes joined and remove overlapping sections in order to unwrap in a way that maintains the planes top down shape.

This is what I have:

And this is what I need:

I have tried in vain for the past 24 hours trying different methods. I am a blender beginner but this seems un-necessarily difficult.

Could anyone please help me out please. How can I tell blender to simply merge all planes and remove any overlapping faces?

Thanks!

Ok, for sake of simplicity,

How would I make this

do this

??

Now for this shape, I would just model it differently so I didn’t have to worry about the merging. But I figured if its possible with the tools/techniques for this simple shape, I could use the same for my actual project in first post.

Something like that is much easier to Boolean union in Inkscape and bring it into Blender as a vector which you can then convert to mesh. It’s another program, true, but it’s actually sooo much quicker to do it that way
