Material masking bug?

Hello,

My scene: http://www.pasteall.org/blend/33376

I’m not sure if this is a bug, however it gets me nuts because it doesn’t seem logical to me. I have tried recreating this scene several times and I’m getting the same error every single time.

I have the standard start-up scene using the Blender Internal render engine with one cube on layer 2 serving as a mask object, one cube on layer 1 with a wire type material and a duplicate of this cube on layer 11.

I have the layers set up as you can see in the pictures below. I hit shift-Z to enter render view, then it will mask the cube on layer 1, but not the cube on layer 11. Why?? Is this a bug? It works if I don’t use a wire type material.

Thanks,

Gustaf

Well… I did create file here and it would work. Then i downloaded yours and it did not. Funny, huh?
Turns out Mask object needs to be created last. At least when i delete your mask and create new it works.
Go figure.

Oh, yes, exactly! It works if the masked object is created after the object that it will be masking is created. I checked your scene too. When I created my file I created the masked object before I created the object on layer 11, hence it didn’t work. Then it’s a bug I guess, as it works no matter which order you do it when you are using for example the surface type material. All the time I thought I was doing something wrong but I couldn’t figure it out, now when I know it works like this I’m feeling relieved.

Thank you for your help! I’m guessing this should be reported?

Guess this could be a bug due to different behavior for different materials. Doesn’t look like exactly feature…
