License of works created with Blender....

Just a quick question: If I create an animation or a game with blender, am I forced to make the project open-source? Or can I make it commercial?

Anything you make is yours to do with as you please. The caveat is that if you use the Player to deploy a game there is some gray area involved with whether or not you need to make the actual game code GPL. All assets remain under whatever license you’d like though.

Thanks for your reply, m9105826. Can I get some more info on this ‘gray area’. The game will be free, but I won’t want other people to just plough through the game’s code.

Please read the sticky of this subforum.

A) If you bind your work with GPL work (into a single application file) it has to be distributed as GPL too.

B) The gray area is if you can use the BGE API within your Python code without the need to publish the Python code under GPL (Is Python code data or not?).

To be sure … do not bind anything you do not want to publish as GPL with A) or B) as B might be GPL.
